About Us
“What is good and beautiful in both our cultures is blended, grown, and shared together in Christ.
We stand united in His name as tangata whenua and say — ‘I am, because I belong to Christ.’
All these forms embrace together. Great things have been achieved. This is our foundation.”
St Michael’s was officially opened in June 1982, under the leadership of Reverend Hāpai Winiata. It was established as a bi-cultural centre of worship, blending the structure and traditions of a marae with the liturgical and spiritual life of the Anglican Church.
The church building itself functions as a wharenui, embracing whakairo, tukutuku, kōwhaiwhai, and other Māori art forms in its design. A previous church marae, once located on Pembroke Street, was replaced by a new hall and wharekai opened in 2013.
